Michael J. French
Memorial Engineering Scholarship

Michael French passed away on August 29, 2004 after a two-year
battle against leukemia. The Tidewater Community College Engineering Club,
along with Mike’s parents, Michael French Sr. and Norma French, has established
a memorial scholarship in his honor.
Mike French was a very active engineering student
at Tidewater Community College. Mike was very outgoing and was well known
among his fellow engineering students. His struggle to overcome his
leukemia illness while completing engineering courses served as an inspiration
of hope and leadership for all who knew him. He served as the TCC
Engineering Club President during the 2001-2002 academic year and eagerly led
the club in competitions, community service, and fundraising events. He
was part of a team of nine TCC engineering students to travel to Montreal where
their autonomous vehicle captured 3rd place in the 2002 ASEE Model Design
Competition. Mike also provided leadership for a team of 25 TCC
engineering students that built a huge structure out of over 9000 cans of food
as part of the nationwide CANstruction competition. The structure was a
memorial to the victims of the 9-11 tragedy and the food was later donated to
the local food bank. Mike French’s commitment to the engineering program
at TCC serves as an excellent example for future TCC engineering students.
Mike French was a 2000 graduate of Kellam High
School, where he was active in both the marching and jazz bands.
Additionally, he attended the Governor’s School for the Performing Arts at Old
Dominion University, studying tenor saxophone. He also served as an
emergency medical technician with the Sandbridge Rescue Squad and was a
lifetime member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church and served there as an
altar boy.
The Michael J. French Jr. Memorial Engineering Scholarship Fund
has been established to give financial assistance to excellent students
pursuing careers in engineering through TCC’s Engineering program.
