2004 ASEE Model Design Competition
Salt Lake City, UT
June 21, 2004

LeTorneau's team was so close to taking first place in this competition!  Their car was about three times faster than any other car in the field, but perhaps not as reliable.  Rather than closely hugging the line on the track as was typical of other vehicles, LeTorneau's car crossed back and forth across the line as it raced at breakneck speed around the track.  On its first trial it was within inches of finishing the course when it ran slightly on top of one of the barriers at the top of the hills and was disqualified.  Although the car was not able to finish the course on any of its three official trials, it clearly was up to the task at times.  The team members put the car back on the track just after the competition ended and it completed the course without incident and with blazing speed!  This was a tough break for an impressive team!
