Stratified Squamous Epithelium

Areas demonstrating stratified squamous epithelia:

Skin
Oral Cavity
Tongue
Lip
Pharynx
Esophagus
Vagina
Cervix (vaginal surface)
Outer cornea

Notes:
- apical cells typical, basal change shape (cub. or col.)
- basement Membrane very thin
- tissue function = protection

- Connective Tissue - mostly collagenous fibers; fibroblasts w/ sml. bl. vs.
(this layer is called the lamina propira)

- mitosis at basal layer = Stratus Germinativum or Stratum Basale.
- new cells push older ones out and these are sloughed off. (they get farther from
  nutrition.
- Dermis of skin = irregular, dense fibrous, conntective tissue
