  Course Information

animated tree showing changing of seasons Welcome to Biology 102!

The objective of this course is to explore the fundamental characteristics of living matter from the molecular level to the ecological community with emphasis on general biological principles. This course will introduce the diversity of organisms, their structure, function, and evolution. My intent is to make biology fun because it is easier to learn and teach if the class is having a good time! Now for some housekeeping...

Office Hours
My availability will usually be during the following times:
Wednesdays 9:15am - 12:30pm
Tuesdays & Thursdays 12:15pm-1:30pm; 2:45pm-5:00pm

**I am also available by appointment for extra help, so please do not hesitate to come to me!

My Expectations
This is a college/university level biology course, so you as the student can expect that a significant amount of effort will have to be put forth. Conversely, you must understand that a significant amount of effort will be put forth on my part. Mutual respect can be expected by all parties involved! I expect that my students will learn during lecture and by completing the assignments. I do not expect my students to complain about what is required of them. The tests and the assignments are described in this syllabus, giving you lots of time to, jump ship if you feel that you can't take on what is expected. One last word, if you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the notes and handouts from a classmate because you will still be held accountable for the material covered in class.

Assignments are due when indicated and an absence will not buy you more time for getting them done! Assignments are not optional and must be turned in on the date indicated. Late assignments will be accepted for a period of only 7 days. If the assignment is turned in late, the following is the guidance I will use for late assignments:

  • 1-3 Days Late ---- 10 points will be deducted
  • 4-6 bays Late ----20 points will be deducted
  • 7 Days Late 30 points will be deducted
  • 8 or more Days Late ---- ASSIGNMENT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!

Classroom Etiquette
Lecture begins promptly at the designated class time. I realize that unforeseen circumstances may force many of you to be late on occasions. However, I will not tolerate habitual tardiness! If you cannot get here at that time, then you need to find a class that meets later in the evening.

Please refrain from the following:

No lap tops - distracting to the others
No cell phones - turn them off
Pagers should be on vibrate
No crunchy food or cooked food
No arguing with the instructor
No talking during lecture
NO CHEATING! No excuses! No complaining!
Please, stay home if you are really sick!
Hats are not allowed to be worn during quests!
Do not turn assignments in to the instructor in the Ladies' Room!
Please, do not expect an immediate response via e-mail!

So, you may be saying what can I do?
You may tape record the lecture
You may eat quietly
You may converse with others, but not during lecture time
You may ask questions and question the instructor
You may leave class for the restroom
Enjoy the lecture and Biology!

Attendance is mandatory. The student may have three absences, if more there are more than three absences then I will deduct one letter grade from the final grade. I do not withdraw students if they stop coming to class. It is your responsibility to withdraw yourself or come to class.

  Extra Credit

Extra Credit Project
This is an optional opportunity to earn extra points (up to 5 if done to completion) on your final grade. This project will be for you to create an anatomical model or drawing of your choice in which you compare several examples of the same structure. This could be feathers (contour, downy, retrices, etc.), molar teeth (grazers, carnivores, omnivores, etc.), eyeballs (octopus, cat, human, etc.), or forelimbs (bird wing, bat wing, fox limb, etc.). There must be 5 examples and their common structures must be labeled. Additionally, a 1/2 page narrative must accompany the project that describes the similarities and differences.
