Course Policies & Procedures

Specific Course Policies

Assignment Policy.  Students are expected to post all assignments on Discussions section in blackboard for a grade and to participate in building a learning community with their classmates.  Assignments such as video assignments and final exam will be required to be posted on assignment links instead of Discussions. Graded work is not accepted via email.  All assignments are expected to be submitted in .doc or .docx format (if power point, in .ppt or .pptx) for a grade.  Assignments are to be submitted by first stating Student Name, Chapter, Topic, Date, and then question/s you are answering, answer the question/s, and note any resources that you used to answer question/s.  Follow the grading rubrics outlined in Blackboard.

Although this entire course is planned to be online, the course attendance policy found in the TCC College Catalog is followed in this course.   The instructor has the discretion to change an exam to a testing center at any time with advance notification to students.

Statement on Classroom Behavior: TCC is committed to maintaining a social and physical environment conducive to carrying out its education mission.  Therefore, all members of the TCC community are expected to demonstrate standards for civility according to the TCC Student Handbook, including:

Grade Policy

Based on the progression of the course, the grade distribution for each assignment may change. However, if changes are made, I will notify students in a timely manner and in writing. Final grades are made available to each student within the Student Information System (SIS) now web delivered via MyTCC or SIS.

Project/Case Studies (80 points)

3 each  – 20 points each - Best 3 out of 4.  If first three are completed, 4th one is optional.-  60 points

The Final project/case study is required – 20 points - If Final is not taken, 20 points may be deducted from grade points earned.  - 20 points.

Discussions: (160 points)

Weekly Research and Critical Thinking Assignments : 15 weeks – 150 points.

Includes research, citations, participation in discussion board and any partner work– based on Rubric, in particular, quantity, quality, professionalism, weekly feedback of other classmate’s participation threads, interpersonal skills in building and contributing to an online community.  These are research assignments, not personal opinions although your personal commentary is welcome following research and critical thinking based on research.

Completing Introduction of yourself - 5 points

Completing course evaluation - 5 points

Journaling: (20 points)

Total 4 journals (post under Tools, Blackboard) - 5 points each, 2 each half semester

Quizzes:  Optional for further understanding of text.  No grades unless specified.

TOTAL Points: 260 -point course.  Therefore, to earn an A grade, 234 points are required.  To earn a B grade, 208 points are required, to earn a C grade, 182 points are required, to earn a D grade, 156 points are required.  Thus, by mid-semester, if you have 117 points, you are about an A grade, if you have 104 points, you are on your way to a B grade, if you have 91 points, you are around a C grade and if you have 78 points, you are around a D grade.  Non-participation or minimal participation may result in Instructor withdrawing you from this course.

Extra credit – Based on Instructor discretion, the quality and quantity of outstanding Discussion Board participation may earn extra credit.  Typically, instructor offers extra credit to ALL students, if offered, but no extra credit on an individual basis.

Grading Scale for the Course:

A – 90 – 100%

B – 80 – 89%

C – 70 – 79%

D – 60 – 69%

F – Below 69%

Note:  To be graded, assignments need to be submitted on blackboard in .doc or .docx format.  If power point, in .ppt or .pptx format.  Assignments must be posted on Discussions Forum (or with specific instruction, on Assignment link) on time to be graded full credit.  Request you put your name on every assignment and identify yourself when you name your assignment.  No graded work is accepted via email.

Course Communication

Weekly Discussion Board participation, including feedback on classmate’s discussions is expected weekly.   This Online course requires at least 3 entries and participation's per week in addition to reviewing blackboard daily.  Students should check their college VCCS emails at least twice per week for emails from the Professor.

The best ways to reach Professor is via email.  If you do not receive a reply within 24 hours, repeat your email.  No graded work is accepted on email.  Email is for communications and it is preferred instead of posting questions on blackboard, kmg210@email.vccs.edu.  The Professor prides herself on responding to students promptly.  Text is also acceptable for urgent matters but identify yourself on texts.  If you need to talk to Professor, email first and suggest some times that might work for you to talk.

When responding to classmates Discussions postings, always start with their name first, similar to a letter, so we all know whom you are addressing.  When you submit any homework, always put your name on the top of the page as well as add your name when naming the assignment on your computer.  Always save your work on your computer until after the class has ended.  When posting on Discussions, Professor prefers that you even add your name on the title of your work each week.   This is all about business - marketing yourself.

Attendance Policy

All students are expected to be present and on time at all scheduled class and laboratory meetings. Instructors are not required to admit a student who arrives late to the classroom. A student who adds a class or registers after the first day of classes is counted absent from all class meetings missed.

If a student is absent more than 15 percent of scheduled instructional time, attendance may be defined as unsatisfactory. This calculation includes absences occurring during the add/drop period. See also the Withdrawal Policy in this syllabus for more information. Per the college’s attendance policy, faculty have the right to develop a more stringent policy as well. Students who do not attend or participate in class by the deadline to drop for tuition refund may be deleted from the course.

Attendance policy:  All students are expected to be timely in their assignments.

Students who do not attend or participate in class by the deadline to drop for tuition refund may be deleted from the course.  Students who do not continually participate or maintain a passing grade, may be withdrawn from the course.

Late Work/Make-up Exam Policy

Late Work/Make-up Exam Policy:  There will be four projects/case studies, no extensions, so plan ahead as schedule is posted by the class start date and usually there are options for taking.    Assignments are posted well in advance and most homework work may be done in advance.  Quizzes are optional and not graded, unless specified.  Thus, no make-up quizzes or projects/case studies are available.  This course has reduced mandatory weekly quizzes, so amount of work is greatly reduced.  Students are expected to read and study text so that Discussions and Projects/Case Studies are at the 200 college level.  Open dates will be announced in blackboard. FINAL project/case study is mandatory and 20 points may be deducted from your grade if you do not submit on time. No extension for final exam as grades are due to TCC the following day of exam.

If a student has not participated in this online course for 10 calendar days or more, or if student's participation is minimal, Instructor may withdraw student at any time.  Usually instructor will email student of withdrawal.

Points will be deducted for late work, if late work is accepted at all.  If student is submitting a late request, request is expected to be requested via email in advance, especially for emergency situations, not after the fact.  This is a business course and abiding by timeframes is critical to success and an indication of one’s reputation in business.  Even with these circumstances, no points will be awarded after 5 calendar days late, to be fair and respectful to students who have submitted on time.  Dates are clearly marked and posted in advance, and personal calendars should be marked.  At times, based on Professor’s discretion or error, due dates may be extended, but will typically be extended for all students.  Communicate, communicate, communicate with your instructor via email.

Classroom Behavior

TCC is committed to maintaining a social and physical environment conducive to carrying out its education mission. Therefore, all members of the TCC community are expected to demonstrate standards for civility.

·       Be moderate in speaking. Loud, obscene, argumentative, or threatening speech is disruptive to teaching and learning and is offensive to others. It has no place in an academic setting

·       Resolve any disagreements in a positive, non-combative manner. Request the assistance of college authorities if needed.

·       Show respect for the comfort of others in an educational setting by observing acceptable standards for personal cleanliness and dress.

Electronic Devices

Cell phones, pagers, and other communication devices are prohibited from use in classrooms, laboratories, and libraries, unless authorized by the appropriate faculty or staff. Although soundless communication devices such as cell phones and pagers are permissible in classrooms, college offices, and/or meeting rooms, they must not be answered during class.

Electronic Devices Policy: This course follows the TCC Communication devices policy in the TCC Student Handbook.  No recordings are to be made unless permission from the Professor is requested.  All intellectual property remains the ownership of the Professor.  All photos are the intellectual property of Professor.

Inclement Weather/Emergent Hazardous Conditions

Tidewater Community College uses TCC Alerts to immediately contact and inform faculty, staff and students of a major crisis or emergency. TCC Alerts delivers important emergency alerts, notifications, and updates via:

·       Email (work, home, other)

·       Text Message via Cell phone

·       Pager

When an incident or emergency occurs, authorized senders will be instantly notified via TCC Alerts. TCC Alerts is a personal connection to real-time updates, instructions on where to go, what to do, or what not to do, who to contact, and other important information. New users may register via the link on the College’s Closings & Emergencies webpage (https://www.tcc.edu/closings-emergencies).

All students are encouraged to sign up for TCC Alerts as soon as possible. If you have already subscribed, please verify your contact information is up-to-date in TCC Alerts.

This is in compliance with TCC policy 1401.

Disposition of Classes for Emergency Shutdown of the College

In the event of an emergency shutdown of the college, the president and her executive staff may elect to conclude the term in session if eighty-five percent or more of that term has been completed. If the term in session is concluded, faculty shall compute final grades of students based on coursework completed at that point.

This course is entirely online, however, emergencies may impact this course, following TCC policy.

nbsp;
Academic Policies & Procedures

Students are responsible for being aware of the policies, procedures, and student responsibilities contained within the current edition of the TCC Catalog and Student Handbook.

Withdrawal Policy

Students who wish to withdraw without academic penalty should contact a counselor to determine the appropriate procedure. Withdrawals through completion of 60 percent of a session will result in a W grade. After 60 percent of a session is completed, a withdrawal will result in a grade of F in a credit course or a grade of U in a developmental course, except under mitigating circumstances that must be documented by the instructor and approved by the academic dean. Dynamic session classes have unique refund and withdrawal dates. Contact a campus Enrollment Services Office for more information, or visit the Academic Calendar website (URL provided in Important Websites section).

A student who drops after the last day to withdraw does not receive a 'W'. He/she receives an 'F', in which case there is both an academic and financial penalty. A student who withdraws by the deadline faces a financial penalty, but not an academic penalty.

09/05/2018

Deadline to drop to tuition refund

10/25/2018

Deadline to withdraw without academic penalty and to receive a grade of W for the course

Academic Integrity

TCC will expect students to demonstrate personal and academic integrity, to be open to new ideas, and to share in a community where individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures help one another grow intellectually, socially, and personally.

TCC expects students to achieve, not just to get by. And while many caring and talented faculty and staff are here to help, students must take responsibility for their own learning. Students should strive for a high level of academic performance and to be responsible, contributing citizens within the college and in outside communities. Above all, TCC wants students to develop a love of learning that will last a lifetime, along with a life-long interest in maintaining emotional and physical wellness.

Student Outcomes Assessment Requirement

Work products submitted by students to fulfill course requirements may be used by the college to evaluate its academic programs and general education requirements.

Plagiarism and Academic Misconduct

Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, the following actions: cheating on an examination or quiz—either giving or receiving information; copying information from another person for graded assignments; using unauthorized materials during tests; collaboration during examinations; buying, selling or stealing examinations; arranging a substitute for oneself during examinations; substituting for another person, or arranging such a substitution; plagiarism—the intentional or accidental presentation of another’s words or ideas; collusion with another person or persons in submitting work for credit in class or lab, unless such collaboration is approved in advance by the instructor.

Faculty members who have reliable evidence of academic misconduct will (1) investigate the matter, and (2) review the facts of the matter and the proposed penalty with the appropriate academic dean. They may then take one or more of the following actions:

If the faculty member chooses to refer the matter to the campus Dean for Student Services or designee for disposition, the Plenary Disciplinary Procedure shall be followed, and the student’s dismissal from the college is a possibility.

Educational Accessibility

Students who have documented, diagnosed disabilities, and who need special accommodation s for tests, etc., are advised to see the Educational Accessibility Disabilities Services staff in Student Services so that the instructor may be notified of what accommodations are appropriate in each case. Requests for accommodations should be made to the designated campus Educational Accessibility counselor at least 45 days before classes begin. Documentation must be provided to support the need for accommodations.

Students who have been hospitalized (for medical or psychiatric reasons) unexpectedly during the semester shall contact the Office of Educational Accessibility Counselor for support and connection to college resources. If the student is incapacitated, a designee may make contact on their behalf.

For assistance with disabilities, contact the campus Educational Accessibility Counselor/Provider or the Coordinator of Educational Accessibility Services: call 822-7752, visit Student Services/Development, or visit the Educational Accessibility webpage (URL provided in Important Websites section).

Emergency Procedures

In the event of a bomb threat, tornado, or fire, students and staff may be directed to evacuate the building or move to an internal assembly area within the building. Evacuation routes are posted in each classroom. The map indicates the route to the nearest exit. Students should review the map to make sure that the exit routes for the building are clearly understood. The information regarding locations of the Emergency Assembly Areas and Internal Assembly Areas for all classrooms or spaces used on the various campuses is available on the Crisis and Emergency Management Plan (CEMP) webpage (https://web.tcc.edu/emergency/cemp.htm). If you require assistance during an evacuation, let your instructor know at the end of the first class.
