Student Activities

Introduction

Student centered activities are vital to student learning as the student is given the opportunity to collaborate with others and gain deeper meaning through research and discussion. With the availability of Web 2.0 tools students can utilize Web resources from within the institution as well as free services provided such as wikis and blogs. These tools can be used to further the discussion and debate topics that will can help shape attitudes and reinforce learning concepts.


DiscussionDiscussion

Blackboard Discussion Board or Wikispaces Student Discussion Postings.

For instructional objective: Given a specific video Teacher Gets Fired scenario:

  1. Take a position in support of the employee or business/institution based on the specific outcome of a situation. Support your position with legal and/or ethical opinions.
  2. Determine if any rights of the individual or business/institution have been violated based on the specific actions against the individual or business.

Students can utilize the discussion board feature of Blackboard or a discussion area on a free discussion board web resources such as Proboards. to post their supporting positrons regarding the video scenario.


PodcastsPodcast

Students can create podcasts which are audio recordings which can be downloaded for listening on IPods and computers.

For instructional objective:Given the video Internet Social Networking scenario:

  1. Form an opinion on what degree you believe an employer has to search and make judgments on the content that an employee may put online?

Students can create podcasts based on their judgment and opinions on the given scenario. Students can create podcasts by using Audacity a free audio software to record their voice. The recorded MP3 files can be posted to a Podcast site such as MyPodcast for distribution.


WikiWiki

Students can collaborate on a Wiki to organize ideas and present information. Sites such as Wikispaces will allow easy set-up for wiki environments.

For instructional objective: Given three scenarios where an employee posts questionable content:

  1.  Identify three consequences of employee actions and discuss if the accused person is being met with the appropriate situation such as reprimand, termination etc. Support your position by citing legal and ethical opinions.
Students could collaborate to determine the possible solutions and or policy that can be developed when dealing with employee issues that can reflect back on the workplace.
