Quiz -- Chapters 5, 6 and 7

Quiz Chapter 5

  1. Print -- Stockholders would need to have a paper copy since it can’t be assumed that all stockholders have a computer to view the report.
  2. Web --  For ease of distribution
  3. Web – Software updates would need to be distributed on the Web so users can download. Would most likely use email to let people know about the update as well.
  4. Print and Web --  Probably need to send a newsletter on paper as well as email or PDF file
  5. Web – since you are interested in worldwide distribution. Beware of copyright infringement.
  6. Print and Web – Have a artists portfolio and  a Web portfolio to show your artistic work.

Quiz Chapter 6

  1. Check Alignment of a Website you designed.
  2. http://coxavid.com
    http://aroofabove.net
Note the pages are aligned to the interface components on the page
  3. Spatial Arrangements
  4. Text and Titles
    Images
Captions on Photos that require them
  5. Repetitive Elements
    1. Note the style is repetitive which lets the user know they are still on the same site.
    2. Note contrasting elements, use of color,  and simple design elements.

Quiz Chapter 7

Two examples of the same website:

A. This example does not follow good design principles. The site lacks navigation components and the elements are placed randomly on the page. There is also a broken link to a graphic. What appears to be a large navigation button is not on the main screen as the user will have to scroll to see what the link is.

B. This is an improved version of this site. The color scheme helps the site as the navigation is more cleanly laid out on the left side where it is easily accessible and visually cues the user that it is navigation. The graphics do a better job enhancing the page and add a visual improvement to the site. The title graphic of the page is reduced in size as it was out of proportion originally with the other elements of the page.

Self Guided Tours -- Chapters 5 and 7

Self Guided Tour Chapter 5

  1. Site Map http://www.apple.com/sitemap/
    1. If the site were in print it would have to constantly reprinted to reflect the changes. Updating the Website is much more cost effective.
  2. Yes as it depends on the site.
    1. News sites definitely cram as much info into one page as possible. Other sites depending on the product and audience tend to stick to design principles with less content.
  3. This does happens where sites make you jump around. Most really good sites will incorporate the 3- click rule where you should be able to find what you need in 3 clicks. Otherwise it has been suggested from a user standpoint that the user will leave the site.
  4. It would be useless. This is the beauty of data driven sites where content can be dynamically updated as in the www.weather.com site or sports sites that update not only scores but players stats etc.
  5. In this day of Web-based resources and instantaneous communication with the Web, most people will not take the time to print and fill out a form to be mailed in.

Self Guided Tour Chapter 7

http://www.tcc.edu/

  1. Yes – The site is for a community college
  2. As a new student or a novice user the navigation may be confusing.
  3. Most of the links are self supporting. Some may open to interpretation
  4. There is no home page button, but the Logo will bring you back to the main home page.
  5. No – you have to scroll down.
  6. Yes and No – Some of the type is small but the graphics are self supporting.
  7. This page does incorporate a lot maybe even too many navigation links. There is some Flash animation but  I do not consider it intimidating.
  8. http://www.tcc.edu/students/military/sitemap.htm -- There is a site map but it is not easily found. As in many sites you have to search for it. Don’t actually understand the question unless I am supposed to bookmark site maps from other sites.
  9. With the images turned off this site is difficult to navigate. You will have difficulty locating submenus being that the formatting font and size has changed.
  10. I would say the Flash piece complements the site.
  11. This is really not an interesting site to attract 18-30 year olds which is the majority of the student body.
  12. It does not look “junky” but it is busy and can be confusing.
  13. www.monkey.com
    1. Breaks many of the rules of traditional sites although I would not use the word rules but maybe guidelines. This type of site captures interest and from a design standpoint motivates me to figure out how they created it.
