IT Conduct Ethics: Employee Conduct and Responsibility Unit Content

Initial Presentation 1

Did you ever consider that your employer or a potential employer would search for online postings or social networking sites that you moderate?

Generative Strategy 1

View the video titled Internet Social Networking . Answer the questions on the worksheet regarding the content of the video. (2) Given the various additional scenarios, create a mental model to determine if you agree with the consequences of the given action.

Do you think the employer or potential employer has the right to make judgments on the content that you put online?

Do you have online content that an employer or potential employer may deem unacceptable? What type of content do you think would be deemed unacceptable by an employer?

Create a Mental Model: Consider the three examples where questionable content may be viewed by others online in as in the case of an employer viewing an employee’s MySpace account. The learner will identify three consequences of employee action and discuss if the accused person is being met with the appropriate situation such as reprimand, termination etc.

      1. Pictures of drinking employee where employee appears to be drunk. (employee reprimanded)
      2. Pictures of pornography (employee suspended without pay)
      3. Disparaging comments against the employees boss (employee fired)

Identify at least 3 negative consequences for an employee placing inappropriate content online.

In our society, certain employees are required to maintain a standard of conduct that others may not be held to. This may include teachers, police officers, politicians, doctors and other noted professionals.

View the video titled Teacher Gets Fired over MySpace

Application Feedback 2:

Go to the discussion section of the and respond to the discussion question.

Do you think the school board/division violated this teacher's rights by terminating employment based on the content posted on his MySpace Web site? Support your position with legal and/or ethical opinions.
